Shortlisted in the Health Profession category are Kathy D’Arcy from Cork, Ireland, who has worked as a doctor and youth worker, Medical Social Worker Iora Dawes from Mansfield in England, and respiratory physician Andrew Dimitri from Sydney, Australia, who is also a field doctor for the international humanitarian organisation Médecins Sans Frontières. The goals of our review, primarily covering the period 1995 through 2007, were to assess the state of peer-reviewed research on arts and healing, to provide a brief summary of both qualitative and quantitative research methods and results, and to describe the principal categories of creative expression that have emerged as effective means of enhancing health and wellness.
This paradigm aims to counter the artificial and defensive barriers constructed between practitioners and professional groups within the field, encourage greater respect and understanding between practitioners and assist in identifying training and development needs for the various arts professionals working in contexts related to health and well-being.
The course aimed to provide students with an understanding of the key theories that inform teaching and learning in adulthood; to provide them with the knowledge and skills to work creatively with groups; to give them the capacity to critically reflect on their practice in the field of arts and health and to give them an understanding of what ‘arts and health’ is and the role of the arts in healthcare, both theoretical and practical.
We searched the following databases and Internet sites, covering the recent period of 1995 through 2007: Medline (PubMed) for general health care literature; Proquest, specifically PsycINFO for psychology journals and CINAHL for nursing and allied health literature; the Cochrane Library for health care reviews; and the Web of Science database including the Science Citation Index, the Social Sciences Index, and the Arts and Humanities Index.
Depending on the study areas you choose in the Health Sciences component, you may qualify to work in areas such as health promotion, community health, project management, program planning, family and community support, housing services, sports psychology, sports nutrition and sports development.
