These amazing Story Vases were the vision of Renee Padt and Ikko Yokoyama, the creators of ‘Editions in Craft’, who worked with FRONT – a four girl design team from Sweden, and of course, the Siyazama craftswomen in Durban, South Africa. Legitimate research questions include whether certain art-based therapies are more or less effective than others, whether the impact of therapy can be tied to other important variables and preconditions, and whether health benefits are sustained or short term.
AAF is seeking to build on these well-established artistic assets and establish effective partnerships with organisations that have interest and objectives in the use of Arts in promoting and improving health and wellbeing of the African population.
The programme, now encompassed as the National Centre for Arts and Health, has engaged in collaboration with major cultural institutions in the State, including the Irish Chamber Orchestra, the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland, the National Gallery of Ireland, NUI-Maynooth and RUA RED Arts Centre.
Sandel et al. conducted pilot research at 2 cancer centers in Connecticut to determine the effects of a dance and movement program on quality of life, shoulder function, and body image among breast cancer survivors treated within the preceding 5 years.
Despite strong historical beginnings in veterans’ hospitals during World War II, having previous research funded through grant awards from the Department of Health and Human Services, and having inclusion in federal programs such as the Older Americans Act, arts in health is still under-funded and under-researched.
