You might think that you do not need to learn martial arts in this day and age. Over the course of the program, Harvard faculty and Ensemble members will present sessions designed to challenge participants to consider the role of passion in teaching and learning. When martial arts students first begin their program they will spend many classes learning stretches, holds, and most importantly safety.
Students use computers to research ideas, find visual examples, and to expand concepts. The artists on the Teaching Artist Roster represent creative writing, dance, folk, ethnic and traditional arts, media arts, music, theatre, storytelling, and visual arts.
When a student begins their martial arts program they are taught in a structured classroom setting by an instructor that is skilled in the art. On average, all children can lose approximately two months of learning from the previous school year during the summer months without engaging education activities, and for low-income students, the loss is even greater.

Kathleen has always used IEW’s Teaching Writing with Structure and Style at home with her children, and Trina is currently using Primary Arts of Language with her 1st grade son. Research has identified that arts opportunities are correlated with increased academic achievement and school engagement.
