It seems the last exam board offering Art History as an A level is dropping it, which might not seem to be a big deal to many people, especially with so many other things going on in the world right now, but I think it’s worth talking about. It might always have been a fairly marginal A level in terms of the number of schools offering it, or students taking it. Not being able to sit it is no bar to taking a degree in the subject, and yet I can’t help but feel we’re all a little poorer for this decision.
However, the history of unarmed combat goes back as far as civilization itself with the earliest records showing unarmed combat going back to about 4000 B.C. There were hieroglyphics found in the Egyptian pyramids showing the military men of that time using fighting techniques resembling what we know as boxing.
Rutgers students interested in teaching in secondary schools major in Art History and either simultaneously take courses in the School of Education or go on to do so after graduation, thus allowing them to teach Art History in the limited number of public high schools in which it is offered.
Since then the gallery has showcased the work of many artists and groups including Alex Grey , WEAD , and Lonnie Graham and has provided Arts & Consciousness students with an exhibition venue that makes visible their internal journey as artists and educators.
UCD offers two taught master’s degrees for suitably qualified graduates: the Master’s in Art History and the Master’s in Cultural Policy & Arts Administration, as well as the opportunity to pursue doctoral research, all of which provides further possibilities for careers in the arts.
